Restaurant Week 3rd and final stop – Kampai

My goal was to visit at least 3 different places during Restaurant Week.  Doing so gets you entry into a drawing to win a coupon to one of the featured eateries.  So I settled on one of my favorite sushi places...Kampai.  We have been there often and have learned that if you are in a hurry, this might not be the best choice.  However, if it’s a Friday night and you invited some friends to relax and unwind it usually fits the bill.  As I had done at the other places earlier in the week, I chose dishes off their special menu.  I enjoyed the soup and edamame, shojun jump and the special sushi roll.  Overall I’d say everything was about what I expected.  The special sushi roll was the only item I had never tried before.

Miso Soup and Edamame

The Edamame and Miso soup were included as a starter for the special menu. Typical of what you would expect. Miso has never been my favorite, but it was probably better than most.

Shogun Jump

By far my favorite of all 3 dishes. I’ve had this several times as shared appetizer. But tonight I got to have these lovely, crisp, tempura -fried scallops in a spicy aioli sauce all to myself. Rich, creamy, crunchy and delicious.

The Special Sushi Roll

The Special Sushi Roll had tempura shrimp, radish, avocado, tuna, and some cucumber. It was paired with a cranberry and oyster style sauce that gave it a sweet, salty, spicy flavor combo that I enjoyed.

Will I attend another restaurant week?

This was the second time I have participated in Restaurant Week.  Will I do it again if they decide to hold another event?  Most likely not.  I think it’s a case of unfulfilled expectations.  My hope was that the participating businesses would see this as an opportunity to show off a bit.  To create some new menu items or at least take some of their customer favorites and kick it up a notch.  44 Canteen was the only place that delivered on what I was hoping to experience.  They took the time to plan a creative and delicious menu by offering their customers something special to celebrate the week.
